The Paul Wissmach Glass Co. Inc. uses a certified laboratory to conduct the FDA required tests to determine if there is any leaching of metals after firing our kiln glass with and without the luminescent coating. The BSC laboratory-verified, that there are no traces of metals leaching and therefore attested that our kiln glass is food save by FDA standards.
However, they also explained to us, that when you fire Wissmach glass in your kiln, it is no longer a Wissmach product, but your product. And whatever you fire in your kiln can leave traces of chemicals, that could then contaminate your glass during firing. Before you can sell or use your product as a food-bearing surface you must have your own finished product tested and approved.
Then again we were also told that if your kiln is fairly new and you have not fired any lead or cadmium products, like enameling paints or glazes in your kiln, chances are that you won’t have lead or cadmium traces on your fired glass.
